Taxation

Below is a partial list of SOME of the taxes we pay in the 37th District of Virginia.  Overall, it is estimated that the average person pays approximately 30% of their income on taxes.  This is ONLY achievable because government nickels and dimes us in ways that we don't see.

The most protested tax is the Property Tax, I estimate we pay approximately 3.4% of our salaries on the property tax per year.  You pay a higher percentage on almost every other tax.  The only reason the Property Tax gets the protest that it does is because you receive a bill every year for it.  Government has slowly grown every single one of the percentages that you see below.  This is a direct result of every aspect of government growing and growing.

We HAVE to shrink government and return tax moneys to the people and localities.  At the very bottom of this page are my bill ideas for the VA House of Delegates to begin to address the problem of taxation.

Money at the federal and state level is used to control your locality.  In this race, Democrats have tried to buy your vote to keep a Moderate Republican who supports their tax increases and green energy projects in place.  They do this by giving him money to take back to the district.  Don't let Democrats like Pelosi and Schumer buy your vote with these slimy tactics.

In Botetourt County, we were told by our own school board that they couldn't listen to the voters of Botetourt and had to do what the Feds and State wanted in order to keep money flowing.  This is an obvious example of Taxation Without Representation by way of Federal/State Bribery.  They absolutely should not have the power to buy your local politicians.

Here are SOME examples of the taxes we pay in the district:

  1. State Income Tax - 5.75%
  2. Federal Income Tax - Median within district is 12% - 22%, including employee's payment for Medicare and Social Security
  3. Employer Paid Medicare Tax - Additional 1.45% of your salary
  4. Employer Paid Social Security Tax - Additional 6.2% of your salary
  5. Property Tax - Estimated 3.4% of median annual income within the district

  6. Gas Tax - Currently ~11%, this is a fixed 30.8 to 31.8 cents per gallon
  7. Meals Tax - 6-8%
  8. State Sales Tax - 4.3%
  9. Local Sales Tax - 1.0% currently, 2.0% if my opponent keeps voting to increase the sales tax.
  10. Lodging Tax - 6-8%
  11. Vending Machine Sales Tax - 6.3%
  12. Cell Phone Service Tax - 5%
  13. Distilled spirits ABC store tax - 20%
  14. Automotive Sales and Use Tax - 4.15% of purchase price.  Real world example:  $830 for a $20,000 vehicle.  Not including titling, registration, etc.

What Can We Do?

The reality of our current situation is that we will have at least one chamber controlled by Democrats in 2026.  They have shown almost no interest in working with Republicans on bill initiatives that have any conservative values baked in to them.  But if we win the house/senate/governorship in future elections we have to have a plan ready to go.  And while we have to work to make sure we Turn VA Red so we can take the government back.  Here are some ideas I'd like to work towards:

  • In 2026 I'd like to create a bill which creates a state holiday called "Tax Servitude Day".  The purpose of the holiday will be to increase awareness about taxation.  Each year, the taxation percentage should be calculated on the average taxpayer.  If the tax rate is 30%, then the average taxpayer only keeps 70% of their income per year.  The holiday will be calculated to fall on the day that is 70% of the way through the year.  That would be the 255th day of the year, which would be September 12th.  The concept of the holiday will be that from September 12th until the end of the year, you're working directly for government and not yourself or for your family.  This holiday will increase awareness about how much of our lives we spend working for the government for taxation.
  • Longer term, I'd like to push for full transparency in taxation AND return the power of the purse to localities.  I'd like for all taxes to go to an escrow account where at the end of the year, the federal, state, and local governments have to send you an invoice to collect all taxes in one lump sum.  The escrow account holder upon receiving a tax invoice will transfer the withheld money to the locality first.  The locality will then be responsible for transferring it to the state.  And the state will then transfer it to the federal government.  This will create complete transparency AND will keep monetary power within the localities.
    • The localities would ideally be able to assess whether the statesor feds are meeting their financial obligations.  If the state is supposed to supply road clearing services via VDOT and fails to do so, the locality could (in theory) keep the money paid to clear roads and send the rest to the state.  If the state decides that the federal government isn't meeting its obligations to take illegal immigrants, it can keep the money paid to care for illegal immigrants and send the rest to the federal government.
    • The holder of the escrow account would also potentially be able to invest the account into a CD or other investment account to allow the money to grow and help the local economy.  This would effectively increase the amount you get in your tax return every year instead of letting the federal government hold the money while you make no money with it.
